There are many parent involvement opportunities at UHP.

 

UHP Board of Directors 

UHP is a parent cooperative governed by a Board of Directors, composed of parents, teachers, and the director. As a non-profit corporation, we have established our own Bylaws, which set out the goals and the administrative structure of the school. Any time a change or amendment to the Bylaws is proposed; the families in the school must vote it on. 

Board positions to which parents are elected are: 

  • President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Vice President for Fund Raising
  • Vice President for Parent coordination (relating to program advertising and promotion, Handbook revision, coordination of parent helper schedule, and program evaluation)
  • Vice President for Social Events (relating to school social events e.g. potlucks, class parties, parent meeting, and coordination of snack schedule). 
  • Past Board Member

Board members meet together monthly at the school, work individually or with other parent volunteers in meeting the responsibilities of their positions, and also work on ad hoc committees throughout the school year as needs arise. Board Meeting agendas and minutes of meetings will also be posted there for parents to see. All UHP families are encouraged to participate in Board meetings and to volunteer to help with any of the Board's tasks. 

 

Parent Helping in the Program 

Long regarded as strength of our program, parent helpers work in the classroom environment on a daily basis to assist our teachers. The benefits of this type of parent involvement go beyond the financial savings that member parents earn and the preschool saves by this arrangement. Parent Helpers play an important role in providing a smooth daily routine by assuming many of the housekeeping types of tasks (primarily snack set-up and routine cleaning), allowing the teachers to keep their attention focused on the children. The children enjoy the special feeling they have when their own parent is at school and further benefit from the opportunity to develop relationships with several trusted adults in the classroom setting. 

With our rich diversity of families, everyone gains from having parents in the classroom and the learning opportunities this creates for all of us. We often ask parent helpers to assist us in communicating with individual children (and visiting parents) whose language they share, and to teach us specific words and phrases in other languages. For some of our foreign parents, helping is a way to practice their English and to "learn American". Parent helpers and their children are English Language Learners. Many parents like to help because it gives them a chance to see what the program is like and to get ideas from the teachers about things they can do with their children at home. 

 

Communication/Conferences 

Open communication between home and school is critical to the success and strength of our program. We believe that parents and teachers working together make the difference between a good preschool experience and a great one for you and your child. To this end there are several things we do to encourage ongoing and open communication opportunities: 

  • We ask parents to complete our Child Profile Form upon registration to share information about their child and their expectations for the year ahead.
  • A short parent orientation is held early in the fall semester, to give parents a brief tour of the school and a chance to meet other parents. Attendance is mandatory and we serve dessert!
  • The UHP Family Handbook is given to all families to acquaint them with school policies and procedures. The UHP Family Handbook is available in the Korean and English languages.
  • We ask parents/care givers to drop-off and pick-up the children so that there is daily contact between parents and teachers on an informal level.
  • Monthly Newsletters are given to families which highlight program information and keep parents informed.
  • A list of Board and staff members is given to all families to encourage contact about questions or concerns.
  • Teachers post their weekly lesson plans on the class bulletin boards for parents to see.
  • Written notes and telephone calls are encouraged when language may be difficult for ESL families.
  • Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled each semester and more frequently when parents and/or teachers feel there is a need. Translators are available for conferences.
  • Your Child’s Day is available in the Korean and English languages. 

 

Visitation/Observation 

Our preschool has an open door policy, which means parents who have children enrolled in our program are welcome visitors in our school at any time. Other families interested in seeing our school are encouraged to call first and make an appointment. 

 

Social Events 

Every semester our school organizes a social get-together, for all of our preschool families, at the Eagle Heights Community Center. These events are usually referred to as Potlucks, because everyone is asked to bring something to contribute to the meal that is then shared by all. Since it is up to each family to decide what they will bring, the word "potluck" means whatever food happens to be available. Our potlucks often have a multicultural theme to celebrate the diversity of our families. Some type of hands-on activities or entertainment is usually planned for the children so that the adults can visit with each other after the meal. 

Other opportunities for families to get to know each other at our school include: parent orientation meetings in September of the Fall semester, volunteer work on special board committees, participation in scheduled cleaning sessions, attending the end of semester class parties, and attending the Farewell Ice Cream Social in May for the children. The children moving on to Kindergarten receive the House for Hermit Crab Book or Oh The Places You Will Go Book and the other children receive another child themed book, usually a Caldecott honor book.

 

Clean-Up Sessions 

All UHP families, regardless of member, non-member, or board status, are required to give one hour of time each semester to one of three Clean-Up Sessions at the school to address tasks that aren't part of the daily cleaning routine. These may include (but are not limited to): washing windows, washing chairs and toys, waxing the floor, wiping out window sills, cleaning out the refrigerator, etc. This cooperative effort keeps our school looking great with minimal individual commitment or extra cost to the budget. 

 

Fund Raising

As a private non-profit corporation, our preschool is funded almost entirely by the tuition income from the families who use our program. We do not receive any financial support from the University of Wisconsin or other organizations. 

Maintaining the quality of our program and continuing to improve staff salaries and benefits is of primary importance to our school as is keeping tuition costs affordable for our families and competitive with other programs. For these reasons, fund-raising plays an important role in our school. Parents can support our school's fund-raising coordinator by assisting with fund-raising events, and by helping with other projects (e.g. book sales) throughout the year.

Come along to play, chat and sing with your little ones. Bring a snack and talk to other families whiled the kids enjoy the toys and dramatic play area. 

 

 

Kids Night Out

Three times during each semester , UHP offers a “Kids Night Out” where the children come to the preschool in the evening for dinner and to play. The parents have the evening to study for final exams. One teacher, one volunteer parent teacher, and one volunteer parent helper staff Kids Night Out. The children enjoy coming to their preschool at night.

 

Program Evaluation

We ask our families to tell us what they think about our program and services by completing a program evaluation near the end of every semester. Board members distribute and discuss the results of these brief questionnaires as one way to address concerns and initiate changes in the program. In order for this process to be the most useful, however, participation by all families is important. When language may be a barrier, we encourage families to ask for a translation and/or to answer the questions in their own language. 

 

Other opportunities for parents to share ideas and concerns throughout the school year are: 

  • Talking with teachers at the drop-off and pick-up time.
  • Talking with the director at school or calling during the posted office hours.
  • Speaking with one of the board members.
